How much does a TVDE driver really earn in Portugal?
It's the question everyone asks before starting — and the honest answer is: much less than the revenue figure suggests. The gap between what the app shows and what lands in your pocket is where most people get it wrong. Let's do the real math.
Revenue isn't salary
Imagine you bill €1,300 in a month across the apps. Sounds decent, but fuel or energy, platform commission, maintenance, insurance, Social Security and income tax all still come out of that. After everything, net take-home can land close to half. That's why rule one is never look at the gross alone. Our monthly income calculator walks that full path for you.
The costs that hit hardest
Fuel is by far the biggest one. It's also where many drivers boost profit without working more hours: switching to electric and charging at home can cut cost per km by more than half — see it in the EV cost calculator. Next come maintenance and wear, easy to forget because they don't come due daily, but they're real.
Social Security and income tax
As a self-employed worker, you contribute 21.4% on 70% of your income to Social Security — roughly 15% of what you receive. Income tax under the simplified regime is levied on 35% of revenue and depends on your annual total. Neither is optional, and the best way to avoid a nasty surprise is to set aside a slice every month.
The number that changes the game: € per km and € per hour
Two drivers with the same revenue can end up with very different profits, and the reason is which trips they accept. Judging every trip by €/km and €/hour — counting pickup time — is what separates working a lot from earning well. Our trip calculator gives you an instant verdict on every offer.
So, is it worth it?
It can be — but only with an eye on the numbers. Drivers who treat TVDE like a business (controlling costs, picking good trips, setting aside taxes) earn a decent income. Those who accept everything and ignore costs tend to work enormous hours for little. These tools exist to put you on the right side of that line.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a TVDE driver earn per hour?
It depends a lot on the time of day. On a quiet morning, the real hourly rate — already discounting idle time between trips — often runs €6 to €9. In late afternoon and evening, when demand rises, €12 to €18 an hour is normal, and some drivers top €20 on strong weekends. The most common mistake is looking only at the trip fare and forgetting waiting time — which is why the real €/hour tends to be much lower than the app suggests at first glance.
Is TVDE driving really worth it part-time?
As a supplement to other income, yes, it usually pays off — you pick the peak-demand hours and skip the dead ones. As a sole full-time occupation, the answer depends more on whether you have a paid-off car or fleet commission weighing on your pocket. Drivers who only work the weak morning slots tend to feel they're "working a lot for little"; those who stick to late-afternoon and weekend peaks usually have a very different experience.
How much does an independent TVDE driver earn, versus through a fleet?
Going independent avoids the commission a fleet company takes before paying you, which usually means more money per trip — but you also take on insurance, maintenance and buying or renting the car yourself. In many cases net income ends up similar by month's end, except independently you're the one deciding where to cut costs.
Is there a difference between Lisbon, Porto and the rest of the country?
Yes, and it's significant. Lisbon has the highest request volume and the airport helps fill dead hours, which tends to pull the average up. Porto comes next, with good demand but more driver competition. Outside the two major cities, demand is more irregular — it can pay off during high tourist season (Algarve, Madeira) and be much weaker the rest of the year.
How do I declare TVDE income on my tax return?
TVDE income always falls under category B, Anexo B of the tax return — there's no option to declare it otherwise. Under the simplified regime, 35% of what you billed for the year is considered taxable. The correct activity code (CAE) for TVDE is 49320, which you indicate when opening activity and again when filing through the Portal das Finanças.
What's the difference between a TVDE driver and a taxi driver?
Legally they're distinct activities, each with its own licensing. Taxi drivers operate under a specific municipal license and can use bus/taxi lanes and taxi ranks; TVDE drivers cannot. In exchange, entering TVDE is usually faster and cheaper — no need to acquire a taxi license, historically pricier and limited in number.
How much does it cost to open TVDE activity with the tax authority?
Opening activity itself is free — done online through the Portal das Finanças or in person, indicating CAE 49320. The real costs sit around that: TVDE training and certification (typically €250 to €450), mandatory insurance, and then, once operating, monthly Social Security contributions and VAT if you exceed the exemption threshold.
